The powertrain control module (PCM) performs an internal self-test on the random access memory (RAM) or read/write memory. If this self-test fails, this DTC sets.
• | The ignition voltage is more than 10.0 volts. |
• | The ignition is in the crank or Run position. |
• | The ignition is ON for 5 seconds. |
The internal RAM test fails.
• | The PCM illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when the diagnostic runs and fails. |
• | The PCM records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The PCM stores this information in the Freeze Frame and/or the Failure Records. |
• | The PCM turns the MIL OFF after three consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail. |
• | A last test failed (current DTC) clears when the diagnostic runs and does not fail. |
• | A history DTC clears after forty consecutive warm-up cycles, if this or any other emission related diagnostic does not report any failures. |
• | Use a scan tool in order to clear the MIL/DTC. |
Important: Remove any debris from the PCM connector surfaces before servicing the PCM. Inspect the PCM connector gaskets when diagnosing/replacing the PCM. Ensure that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent water intrusion into the PCM.
Replace the PCM even if this DTC exists only in history.
For an intermittent, refer to Symptoms .
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
Step | Action | Values | Yes | No |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Did you perform the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check? | -- | ||
Important: Program the replacement PCM. Replace the PCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming . Is the action complete? | -- | -- | ||
3 |
Does the scan tool indicate that this test Ran and Passed? | -- | ||
4 | Select the capture info option and the review info option using the scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? | -- | Go to applicable DTC table | System OK |
