Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 183  Size: SH
  5. Remove the brake shoe return springs.

  6. Object Number: 185  Size: SH
  7. Remove the brake shoe guide.

  8. Object Number: 203  Size: SH
  9. Remove the hold down springs.
  10. Remove the hold down pins.
  11. Remove the actuator lever and the actuator lever pivot.
  12. Remove the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
  13. Remove the lever return spring.
  14. Inspect all remaining parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace parts as needed.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 231  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the brake shoe backing plate, the adjusting threads, socket, and socket face with a thin coat of high temperature silicone lubricant.

  2. Object Number: 203  Size: SH
  3. Install the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
  4. Install the actuator lever return spring.
  5. Install the hold down pins.
  6. Install the hold down springs.

  7. Object Number: 185  Size: SH
  8. Install the brake shoe guide.

  9. Object Number: 183  Size: SH
  10. Install the brake shoe return springs.
  11. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  12. Adjust the brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
