Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 865023  Size: SH
  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Relieve the tension from the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer.

  6. Remove the rear park brake cable from the park brake actuator lever. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement .

  8. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  9. Object Number: 820900  Size: SH
  10. Remove the rear drive axle. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.

  12. Remove the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement .

  13. Object Number: 820899  Size: SH
  14. Remove the backing plate bolts.

  15. Object Number: 820897  Size: SH
  16. Remove the backing plate.

  18. Remove the rear brake caliper support bracket.

  19. Object Number: 820895  Size: SH

    Important: The park brake actuator mechanism is part of the rear brake caliper mounting bracket and cannot be serviced separately. The rear brake caliper mounting bracket will have to be replaced if any part of the park brake actuator mechanism is found to be defective.

  20. Inspect the park brake actuator mechanism.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket.

  2. Object Number: 820897  Size: SH
  3. Install the backing plate.
  4. Perform the following procedure before installing the backing plate bolts.
  5. 3.1.  Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.
    3.2. Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner or the equivalent and allow to dry.
    3.3. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493, Red LOCTITEâ„¢ #272, or for Canada use P/N 10953488 to the threads of the bolt.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the backing plate bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the backing plate bolts to 135 N·m (100 lb ft).

  8. Install the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement .

  9. Object Number: 820900  Size: SH
  10. Install the rear drive axle. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.

  11. Object Number: 177201  Size: SH
  12. Adjust the park brake shoe. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .

  13. Object Number: 357011  Size: SH
  14. Install the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  15. Object Number: 820904  Size: SH
  16. Install the park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement

  17. Object Number: 865023  Size: SH
  18. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  20. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  21. Lower vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
