Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Mark the relationship of the brake drum to the axle hub.
  4. Caution: Avoid taking the following actions when you service wheel brake parts:

       • Do not grind brake linings.
       • Do not sand brake linings.
       • Do not clean wheel brake parts with a dry brush or with compressed air.
    Some models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne in dust. Breathing dust with asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. Use a water-dampened cloth in order to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is available commercially in order to perform this washing function. These wet methods prevent fibers from becoming airborne.

  5. Remove the brake drum from the axle.

  7. Remove the brake shoe return springs.

  9. Remove the brake shoe guide and the actuator link.

  11. Remove two hold down springs.
  12. Remove two hold down pins.
  13. Remove the actuator lever and the actuator lever pivot.
  14. Remove the actuator lever return spring.

  16. Remove the park brake strut and the strut spring.
  17. Remove the park brake lever.

  18. Object Number: 207  Size: SH
  19. Remove the brake shoes.
  20. Remove the adjusting screw assembly and the adjusting screw spring from the brake shoes.
  21. Inspect all parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace parts as needed.
  22. Replace all worn parts.
  23. Inspect the wheel cylinder for signs of leakage. If there are signs of leakage, replace the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .
  24. Inspect the brake drum for scoring and machining tolerance. Refer to Brake Drum Surface and Wear Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 231  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the brake shoe backing plate, the adjusting screw threads, the socket, and socket face with a thin coat of high temperature silicone lubricant.
  2. Important: Do not interchange the right and left adjusting screws.

  3. Install the adjusting screw assembly and the adjusting screw spring on the brake shoes. The coils of the adjusting screw spring must not touch the adjusting screw.
  4. Install the brake shoes on the backing plate.

  5. Object Number: 204  Size: SH
  6. Install the park brake lever.
  7. Install the strut spring on the park brake strut.
  8. Install the park brake strut.

  9. Object Number: 203  Size: SH
  10. Install the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
  11. Install the actuator lever return spring.
  12. Install the hold down pins.
  13. Install the hold down springs.

  14. Object Number: 185  Size: SH
  15. Install the brake shoe guide and the actuator link.

  16. Object Number: 183  Size: SH
  17. Install the brake shoe return springs.
  18. Install the brake drum. Align the marks made during disassembly.
  19. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  20. Adjust the brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  21. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
