BATTERY WEAK OR DEAD, GENERATOR NOT CHARGING

SUBJECT: BATTERY WEAK OR DEAD, GENERATOR NOT CHARGING, BATTERY MIL MAY BE ON (REPAIR AND RE-POSITION GENERATOR WIRE)

MODELS: 1998 CHEVROLET AND GMC S/T MODELS 1998 OLDSMOBILE BRAVADA WITH 4.3L ENGINE (VINS X, W - RPOS LF6, L35)

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY REPORT THE BATTERY IS WEAK OR DEAD, THE GENERATOR IS NOT CHARGING AND/OR THE BATTERY MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) MAY BE ON.

CAUSE:

IF FOLLOWING STEPS 1, 2 AND 3 OF STRATEGY BASED DIAGNOSTICS DID NOT REVEAL THE CAUSE, THE GENERATOR "L" TERMINAL WIRE (CKT 225, RED) MAY BE CUT OR CHAFFED CAUSING THE GENERATOR TO NOT CHARGE. THE CUT OR CHAFFING IS WITHIN A FEW INCHES OF THE FOUR PIN CONNECTOR AT THE REAR OF THE GENERATOR. IT IS CAUSED BY THE HARNESS CONDUIT AND WIRE RUBBING AGAINST A SHEETMETAL BRACKET, USED TO SUPPORT THE HEATER HOSES, THAT IS FASTENED TO THE REAR OF THE GENERATOR.

CORRECTION:

REPAIR THE WIRE AND CONDUIT FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE DESCRIBED IN SECTION 8A-5 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

ROUTE THE WIRE AND CONDUIT WITH SLACK AWAY FROM THE HEATER HOSE BRACKET.

IMPORTANT: THE GENERATOR IS NOT DAMAGED AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.
