Tools Required

    • J 33831 Front Output Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 33843 Rear Output Shaft Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  3. If replacing the front output shaft seal, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  4. If replacing the rear extension output shaft seal, remove one of the following:
  5. • Remove the rear one piece propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
    • Remove the rear two piece propeller shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  6. Remove the propeller shaft yoke.
  7. Remove the seal.
  8. • Use a screwdriver in order to remove the seal.
    • Do not damage the sealing bore.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 557116  Size: SH
  1. If installing the seal on the rear extension, use J 33831 in order to install the rear output shaft extension seal.

  2. Object Number: 163920  Size: SH
  3. If installing the front output shaft seal, use J 33831 in order to install the front output shaft extension seal.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 175414  Size: SH
  5. Install the front or rear propeller shaft yoke, rubber seal washer, washer, and nut.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the front or rear output shaft yoke nut to 149 N·m (110 lb ft).

  7. Install one of the following propeller shafts:
  8. •  Install the front output shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement In Propeller Shaft.
    • Install the rear the one piece propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
    • install the rear two piece propeller shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  9. Inspect the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities .
  10. Install the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement .
  11. Lower the vehicle.
