- Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to
Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement
- Nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the cross member.
- Remove the two bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the bolts and screws securing the converter cover to the transmission.
- Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
- Install J 21336 to the converter housing to secure the torque converter
Important: J 21336 prevents the torque converter from pulling forward and dropping out of the transmission during engine and transmission separation.
- Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
- Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
- Flush the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test
.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the bolts and screws securing the converter cover to the transmission.
Tighten
Tighten transmission to engine bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Ensure the torque converter is seated properly and that J 21366 is installed.
- Raise the transmission into place and remove J 21366.
Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
- Install the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
Tighten
Tighten transmission to engine bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Install the nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the cross member.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 52 N·m (38 lb ft).
- Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to
Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement
- Connect the wiring harness connectors to the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
- Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
- Install the oil cooler lines. Refer to
Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case. Refer to
Transfer Case Replacement
or
Transfer Case Replacement
or
Transfer Case Replacement
.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to
Front Propeller Shaft Replacement
- install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to
One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
or to
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
in Propeller Shaft.
- Install the shift cable to the transmission. Refer
Filler Tube Replacement
- Install the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to
Exhaust Manifold Replacement
.
- Unplug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
- Install the filler tube to the transmission. Refer to
Filler Tube Replacement
- Fill the transmission to the proper level with transmission oil. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Check
- Lower the vehicle.
- Test the transmission for proper operation.
Important: It is recommended that the transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.
Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the ECM, PCM or TCM
will need to relearn the TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned,
- Reset the TAP values. Refer to
Adapt Function
.
