    • J 23771 Axle Shaft Seal Installer (7.6 inch Axle)
    • J 21128 Axle Pinion Oil Seal Installer (8.6 inch Axle)
    • J 23765 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer (7.6 inch Axle)
    • J 22813-A Axle Bearing Remover/Installer (7.6 inch Axle)
    • J 23690 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer (8.6 inch Axle)
    • J 23689-A Axle Shaft Bearing Remover (8.6 inch Axle)
    • J 2619-01 Slide Hammer

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the rear axle housing cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement .
  4. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 707827  Size: SH
  6. For axles with drum brakes, remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing from the axle housing using the J 22813-A (7.6 inch axle)  or the J 23689-A (8.6 inch axle) (1) and the J 2619-01  (2).

  7. Object Number: 688157  Size: SH
  8. For axles with disc brakes, remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing from the axle housing using the J 22813-A (7.6 inch axle)  or the J 23689-A (8.6 inch axle) (1) and the J 2619-01  (2).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 695758  Size: SH
  1. Install the axle shaft bearing using the J 23765 (7.6 inch axle) or the J 23690 (8.6 inch axle) (1) and the J 8092  (2).
  2. Drive the axle shaft bearing into the axle housing until the tool bottoms against the tube.


    Object Number: 695762  Size: SH
  3. Install the axle shaft seal using the J 23771 (7.6 inch axle) or the J 21128 (8.6 inch axle).
  4. Drive the tool into the bore until the axle shaft seal bottoms flush with the tube.

  5. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement .
  6. Install the rear axle housing cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement .
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Fill the rear axle. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities and Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
