Subject: | Inaccurate or Erratic Fuel Gauge Readings at 1/4 Tank or Lower (Replace Fuel Level Sensor and Reprogram PCM) |
Models: | 2001 Chevrolet S-10 Crew Cab Pickup Models |
2001 GMC Sonoma Crew Cab Pickup Models |
Some customers may comment that the fuel gauge is erratic, intermittent, fluctuates when at 1/4 tank or lower. Also, the gauge goes from ¼ to empty too quickly (within 32 km (20 mi)).
An improperly calibrated fuel gauge may cause this condition. Also, the float arm geometry may have insufficient length to accurately account for the amount of fuel in the fuel tank when the tank is 1/4 full or lower.
A new fuel level sensor has been released for service. Replace the fuel level sensor. Refer to the Fuel Level Sensor Replacement procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the Service Manual (SI Document ID #692067).
A new service calibration will also be required for this condition. The calibration is available from Techline Customer Support Center (TCSC) at 1-800-828-6860 (English) or 1-800-503-3222 (French). TCSC will provide a VCI number to allow the vehicle to be updated with the proper calibration.
