Diagnostic Aids

If a rattling or clicking noise is coming from the clutch or the transmission, there may be oil on the driven plate damper or the clutch disc. The clutch disc may have damage or weak disc plate springs and diaphragm springs. There may be internal transmission concerns also.

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step inspects the clutch system components and the operation of the clutch system.

Did you review the clutch symptom operations and perform the necessary inspections?

Go to Step 2

Inspect for oil in the driven plate damper.

Is there oil on the driven plate damper?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 3

Inspect the transmission for noise.

Is the transmission operating properly?

Go to Step 5

Go to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission -NV 1500 or Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 3500

  1. Repair the leak source. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .
  2. Install a new driven disc.

Does the clutch still rattle?

Go to Step 5

System OK

Remove the clutch disc and inspect for the following conditions:

    •  Damaged or weak diaphragm springs
    •  Worn clutch disc

Is the diaphragm springs damaged or the clutch disc worn?

Go to Step 6

System OK

Replace the necessary components. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .

Did you find and repair the condition?

Go to Step 7

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.

Did you correct the condition?

System OK
