Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Rear Seal 4wd

Tools Required

    • J 36825 Universal Seal Remover
    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
    • J 36502-2A Shaft Seal Protector/Installer
    • J 36502 Extension Housing Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 4781  Size: SH
  3. Using the J 36825 and the J 23907 remove the seal from the extension housing.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 4757  Size: SH
  1. Position J 36502-2A over the output shaft.

  2. Object Number: 4758  Size: SH
  3. UsingJ 36502 install the rear output shaft seal.

  4. Object Number: 4757  Size: SH
  5. Remove J 36502-2A from the output shaft.

  6. Object Number: 7909  Size: SH
  7. Fill the space between the seal lips with grease GM P/N 1052497 or equivalent.
  8. Install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .
  9. Check the transmission oil level. Refer to Fluid Replacement
  10. Lower the vehicle.

Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Front Seal

Tools Required

J 38801 Input Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 395628  Size: SH
  3. Remove the 2 clutch actuator bolts.
  4. Remove the clutch actuator from the input shaft.

  5. Object Number: 761058  Size: SH
  6. Remove the 6 bolts from the front bearing retainer.
  7. Carefully remove the front bearing retainer.

  8. Remove the seal from the front bearing retainer by using a hammer and a punch.
  9. Remove the old gasket material from the front bearing retainer.

Installation Procedure

Important: Inspect the bearing retainer for any nicks or cracks that may result in a leak. Replace as necessary.

  1. Place the seal in the front bearing retainer.
  2. Using theJ 38801 install the seal.

  3. Object Number: 4770  Size: SH
  4. Apply RTV gasket material to the inboard side of the bearing retainer.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the front bearing retainer and the 6 bolts to the transmission.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the 6 bearing retainer bolts to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  8. Install the clutch actuator and the bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the clutch actuator bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  10. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

Transmission Housing Oil Seal Replacement Rear Seal 2wd

Tools Required

    • J 23129 Universal Seal Remover
    • J 6125-1B Slide hammer
    • J 36503 Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  3. Object Number: 696799  Size: SH
  4. Remove the rear oil seal from the rear case using the J 6125-1B (1) and the J 23129 (2).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 548114  Size: SH
  1. Using the J 36503 install the new rear oil seal.
  2. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  3. Check the transmission oil level. Refer to Fluid Replacement .
  4. Lower the vehicle.
