Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 280860  Size: SH

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  4. Remove the tilt steering column lever (1) from steering column (2).

  6. Remove the lower steering column trim cover (2) to steering column retaining screws (1).
  7. For column shift vehicles, remove the shifter boot from the lower steering column trim cover.

  8. Object Number: 328807  Size: SH
  9. Remove the lower steering column trim cover by tilting the lower trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.

  10. Object Number: 415299  Size: SH
  11. Remove the upper steering column trim cover (2) retaining screw (1).
  12. For column shift vehicles, remove the shifter boot from the upper steering column trim cover.
  13. Remove the upper steering column trim cover (2).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 415299  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper steering column trim cover (2).
  2. For column shift vehicles, install the shifter boot to the upper steering column trim cover.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the upper steering column trim cover (2) retaining screw (1).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the upper steering column trim cover retaining screw to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  6. Install the lower steering column trim cover by matching the tabs slots on the lower steering column trim cover with the locking tabs on the upper steering column trim cover and tilting the lower steering column trim cover up.
  7. For column shift vehicles, install the shifter boot to the lower steering column trim cover.

  8. Object Number: 415298  Size: SH
  9. Install the lower steering column trim cover (2) retaining screws (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  11. Install the tilt steering column lever (1) to the steering column (2).
  12. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  13. Install the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  14. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
