Circuit/System Description
A throttle plate actuator is used to achieve high exhaust gas recirculation rates. It increases the pressure difference between exhaust and intake so that the appropriate exhaust quantity can be mixed with the intake air. The ECM transmits the desired
angle as a PWM signal to the throttle plate actuator. The throttle plate actuator operates the DC motor to control the throttle plate based on the PWM signal from the ECM. The throttle plate position is monitored by an internal position sensor.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | The ignition is ON, or the engine is running. |
• | The throttle actuator motor is commanded ON or OFF. |
• | The ignition voltage is less than 16 volts. |
• | The DTCs run continuously when the above conditions are met. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects an open, short to ground, or a short to voltage on the throttle actuator control circuit for greater than 1 second.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTCs P02E0, P02E2, and P02E3 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTCs P02E0, P02E2, and P02E3 are Type B DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification
- Ignition ON, with a scan tool command the throttle blade from 0-95 percent. The throttle blade should respond to the scan tool commands.
- Observe the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information with a scan tool. DTCs P02E0, P02E2, or P02E3 should not set.
- Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that are captured in the Freeze Frame/Failure Records List.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, and the MAIN fuse removed, disconnect the harness connector at the throttle body assembly.
- Test for less than 5 ohms of resistance between the ground circuit terminal 1 and ground.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, repair the circuit for an open/high resistance. |
- Install the MAIN fuse. Ignition ON, measure for battery voltage between the battery voltage circuit terminal 2 and ground.
⇒ | If less than the specified range, repair the circuit for an open/high resistance. |
- Connect a test lamp between the throttle blade control circuit terminal 3 and B+.
- Command the throttle blade from 0-95 percent with a scan tool. The test lamp should respond to the scan tool commands.
⇒ | If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM. |
⇒ | If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage
or an open/high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the ECM. |
- If all circuits test normal, replace the throttle body assembly.
