This bulletin is being revised to correct part information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-07-31-001 (Section 07 -- Transmission/Transaxle).


Condition

Some customers may comment that the clutch pedal operation does not feel smooth or the transmission is difficult to shift especially at a stop.

Cause

The clutch cable end fittings may not be retained in the transmission bracket because the plastic retaining tabs may bend or crack.

Correction

Inspect the clutch cable for any damage. Replace the clutch cable, if necessary, and install a clutch cable retention block using the procedure listed below. This retention block will aid in retaining the clutch cable to the mounting bracket.

  1. Inspect the clutch cable connection at the transmission bracket for any damage.
  2. • If damage is present, proceed to step 2 to replace the clutch cable.
    • If no damage is present, proceed to step 16 to install clutch cable retention block.
  3. From inside the vehicle, remove the clutch cable retainer.
  4. Remove the clutch cable from the pedal.
  5. Release the tabs and remove the clutch cable from the dash.
  6. From under the hood, remove the pins and the LH fender insert.
  7. Remove the nut and clip from the cable routing bracket.
  8. From under the vehicle, remove the retainer and release the cable from the bracket.
  9. Remove the clutch cable from the vehicle.
  10. From under the vehicle, install the clutch cable to the vehicle.
  11. Install the cable and retainer to the bracket.
  12. From under the hood, install the clip and nut to the cable routing bracket.
  13. Install the LH fender insert and pins.
  14. Install the cable to the dash.
  15. From inside the vehicle, install the cable to the pedal.
  16. Install the clutch cable retainer.
  17. Install the clutch cable retention block.
  18. 16.1. From under the vehicle, remove the retainer and release the cable from the bracket.

    16.2. Place the retention block over the clutch cable end fitting with the threaded stud going through the cable slot in the transmission bracket.
    16.3. Install the nut on the stud.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    16.4. Install the cable and retainer to the bracket.
  19. Adjust the clutch pedal free travel.
  20. • For C6/7/8 Series trucks with diesel engines, the distance should not exceed 6 mm (0.250 in).
    • For C6/7/8 Series trucks with gas engines, the distance should not exceed 38-51 mm (1.5-2.0 in).
    • For C4/5 Series trucks with either gas or diesel engines, the distance should not exceed 38-51 mm (1.5-2.0 in).
  21. Cycle clutch pedal five times, recheck free travel and adjust as necessary.
  22. Verify the proper operation of the clutch.
