Before a dealer/repair facility attempts any transmission shifting related repairs on the above vehicles, the technician should first test drive the vehicle and inspect the positions of the Power Takeoff (PTO) switch and/or the Overdrive Defeat (automatic transmission) switch if equipped. Both switches need to be in the off position.
The PTO switch, located in the IP switchbank, may have been moved to the on position. When the PTO switch is on, the engine speed is limited to 2000 RPM. With limited engine RPM, the transmission will function with long, delayed upshifts. The customer may perceive this as an improper shifting condition.
It may be difficult to tell if the PTO switch has been inadvertently left on due to the indicator's small size and limited travel. The indicator light on the switch also faces the floor when in the on position. You may have to carefully cycle the switch to decide if it is on or off.
Also, these vehicles are available with a split bench front seat that can accommodate three passengers. It is possible that the center seat passenger can inadvertently bump the PTO switch with his knee. The driver and passenger may be unaware that this has occurred until someone notices changes in the vehicle shift characteristics.
Additional changes in transmission operation/feel can occur if the Overdrive Defeat switch (Automatic Transmission only), located on the instrument panel to the right of the steering column, is left in the on position.
Refer to the illustrations below for switch location and identification. Number (11) is the location of the PTO switch.
