    • J 35290 Race Installer - Outer
    • J 45363 Bearing Cup Installer - Inner
    • J 45364 Bearing Cup Installer - Outer
    • J 45672 Hub Seal Installer
    • J 45669 Hub Seal Installer
    • J 28721-909 Wheel Bearing Locknut Wrench (3-3/4 inch)
    • J 28721-910 Wheel Bearing Locknut Wrench
    • J 28721-911 Wheel Bearing Locknut Wrench
    • J 28721-913 Wheel Bearing Locknut Wrench (3-7/8 inch - 8 pt.)

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  3. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement .
  4. Remove the wheel locknut using one of the following:
  5. • J 28721-910
    • J 28721-911
    • J 28721-909
    • J 28721-913
  6. Remove the hub and rotor assembly.
  7. Remove the oil seal from the wheel hub using a suitable seal removal tool.
  8. Remove the inner hub bearing.
  9. Remove the inner hub bearing cup using a brass drift and a hammer.
  10. Remove the retaining ring from the wheel hub.
  11. Remove the outer hub bearing and the bearing cup using the J 35290  (2) and the J 8092  (1).
  12. Remove the wheel bearing spacer.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the following with a light coat of high melting point EP bearing lubricant:
  2. • The outer wheel bearing
    • The inner wheel bearing
    • The outer wheel bearing cup
    • The inner wheel bearing cup
    • The axle housing
    • Install the wheel bearing spacer into the wheel hub.
    • The tabs on the spacer must face towards the inner wheel bearing.

  3. Install the outer wheel bearing.
  4. Install the outer bearing cup.

  5. Object Number: 768672  Size: SH
  6. Drive the bearing cup into the wheel hub using the J 45364  (2) and the J 8092  (1).
  7. Install the inner bearing cup into the wheel hub.

  8. Object Number: 768677  Size: SH
  9. Drive the inner bearing cup into the wheel hub using the J 45363  (2) and the J 8092  (1).

  10. Object Number: 768678  Size: SH
  11. Install the inner wheel bearing.

  12. Object Number: 768680  Size: SH

    Important: Each time you replace the wheel hub bearing, install a new oil seal in order to prevent the wheel hub from leaking. Use the correct oil seal installer as noted below or damage to the seal will occur.

  13. Install the new oil seal using the J 45672  (2) and the J 8092  (1) for GL4 (11,000 lb axle) or J 45669  (2) and the J 45669  (1) for GL8 (13,500 lb axle).
  14. Install the hub and rotor assembly.
  15. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement .
  16. Install the wheel locknut using one of the following:
  17. • J 28721-910
    • J 28721-911
    • J 28721-909
    • J 28721-913 and adjust; refer to Wheel Bearing Adjustment .
  18. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  19. Inspect and add axle lubricant to the axle housing, if necessary.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
