Starter Replacement LG4
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter motor.
- Remove the nuts and the washers that attach the starter motor to the engine.
- Remove the starter motor from the engine.
- Clean the following components:
• | The starter motor terminals |
• | The electrical connectors |
- Inspect the pinion gear teeth for wear and damage.
Installation Procedure
- Connect the starter motor to the engine.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the nuts and the washers that attach the starter motor to the engine.
Tighten
Tighten the starter motor mounting nuts to 82 N·m (60 lb ft).
- Connect the electrical connectors to the starter motor.
- Hold the hex-shaped base of the stud while tightening the positive battery cable nut.
Tighten
- Tighten the positive battery cable nut to 21 N·m (16 lb ft).
- Tighten the solenoid bolt to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).
Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
Starter Replacement LG5
Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
- Remove the starter ground cable from the starter. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Replacement
.
- Remove the electrical connectors from the starter motor.
- Remove the starter motor bolts.
- Remove the starter motor from the engine.
- Clean the following components:
• | The starter motor solenoid terminals |
• | The electrical connector terminals |
- Inspect the starter ring gear teeth for wear and damage.
Installation Procedure
- Install the starter motor to the engine.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the starter motor bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the starter motor bolts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).
- Install the electrical connectors to the starter motor.
Tighten
• | Tighten the battery positive cable nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the starter solenoid nut to 3 N·m (27 lb in). |
- Install the starter ground cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Replacement
.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
Starter Replacement L18
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
- Remove the starter heat shield and extension shield (C42 only) nuts (1, 2) and shields.
- Remove the starter motor solenoid lead nuts.
- If equipped with a automatic transmission, remove the positive cable and engine harness leads from the starter solenoid.
- If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the positive cable and engine harness
lead from the starter solenoid.
- If equipped with a automatic transmission, remove the starter motor bolts.
- If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the starter motor bolts.
- Remove the starter motor.
Installation Procedure
- Install the starter motor.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- If equipped with a manual transmission, install the starter motor bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the starter motor bolts to 67 N·m (49 lb ft).
- If equipped with a automatic transmission, install the starter motor bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the starter motor bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- If equipped with a manual transmission, install the positive cable and engine
harness lead to the starter solenoid.
- If equipped with a automatic transmission, install the positive cable and engine harness leads to the starter
solenoid.
- Install the starter motor solenoid lead nuts.
Tighten
• | Tighten the positive cable nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in). |
• | Tighten the harness lead nut to 2 N·m (18 lb in). |
- Install the starter heat shield and extension shield (C42) to the starter and engine.
Tighten
• | Tighten the shield nuts (1, 2) to 3 N·m (35 lb in). |
• | Tighten the harness lead nuts to 5 N·m (44 lb in). |
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
Starter Replacement LB7
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect both battery negative cables. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the battery positive
cable from the starter motor.
- Remove the solenoid wires.
- Remove the starter motor
bolts.
- Remove the starter motor assembly.
Installation Procedure
- Install the starter motor
to the engine rear cover.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.

- Install the starter motor bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the starter bolts to 78 N·m (58 lb ft).
- Install the solenoid wires.
- Install the starter solenoid nut.
Tighten
Tighten the starter solenoid nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).
- Install the battery positive cable to the solenoid stud.
- Install the battery positive cable nut.
Tighten
Tighten the starter battery positive cable nut to 9 N·m
(80 lb in).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect both battery negative cables. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
Starter Replacement 6.6L (LLY)
Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing

- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

- Remove the engine wiring harness nut (4).
- Remove the engine wiring harness lead (1) from the starter.
- Remove the positive battery cable nut (7).
- Remove the positive battery cable lead (8) from the starter.
- Remove the starter motor bolts.
- Remove the starter motor.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the starter motor.
- Install the starter motor bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 78 N·m (58 lb ft).
- Install the positive battery cable lead (8)
to the starter.
- Install the positive battery cable nut (7).
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
- Install the engine wiring harness lead (1) to
the starter.
- Install the engine wiring harness nut (4).
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
Starter Replacement 8.1L
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
- Remove the starter heat shield bolts, nut,
and shield, if necessary.
- Remove the positive cable nut.
- Remove the positive cable from the starter solenoid.
- Remove the engine harness ground nut from
the starter solenoid.
- Remove the engine harness ground (4) from the starter solenoid.
- Remove the starter motor bolts.
- Remove the starter motor.
Installation Procedure
- Install the starter motor.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the starter motor bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the engine harness ground (4) to
the starter solenoid.
- Install the starter solenoid nut.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).
- Install the positive cable to the starter
solenoid.
- Install the starter lead nut.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
- Install the starter heat shield, nut and
bolts, if necessary.
Tighten
• | Tighten the bolts to 3 N·m (35 lb in). |
• | Tighten the nut to 5 N·m (44 lb in). |
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
.
