    • J 22828 Input and Countershaft Race Installer
    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
    • J 45277 Shaft Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  3. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 811343  Size: SH
  5. Remove the 6 bolts holding the quill tube to the front of the transmission.
  6. Remove the quill tube.

  7. Object Number: 811352  Size: SH
  8. Using the J 23907  (1) and the J 45278  (2), remove the input shaft seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 811520  Size: SH

    Important: When installing the input shaft seal, there is not a stop for the seal in the case. Using the seal tools will install the seal at the proper depth. Hitting too hard on the seal tools can misplace the seal at the proper depth.

  1. Using the J 22828 (1) and the J 45277 (2), install the input shaft seal.
  2. 1.1. Position the seal in the front case with the open side to the transmission.
    1.2. Lightly tap on the J 22828 to install the seal.

  3. Install the quill tube.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the 6 bolts holding the quill tube to the front of the transmission.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the quill tube bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

    Notice: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in the Preface section.

  7. Install the transmission drain plug and O-ring seal. Ensure the O-ring seal is not damaged.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  9. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  10. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  11. Inspect the transmission fluid level. Add fluid, if necessary.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
