Driver/Passenger Outside Rearview Mirror Shake/Vibration (Apply Sealant and Retighten Mirror Pivot Bolt and Shaft Screws)

Condition

Some customers may comment that the driver or passenger outside rearview mirror shakes/vibrates while driving.

Cause

Vibration over time and a lack of sealant on the mirror pivot/shaft fasteners may cause the fasteners to loosen or fall out into the mirror housing.

Apply sealant and retighten Mirror pivot and shaft fasteners.

Do NOT replace the complete outside rearview mirror assembly.

Apply sealant to the mirror pivot and shaft fasteners and retighten using the following procedure. You do not need to remove the mirror from the vehicle to do this procedure.

  1. Unsnap the bottom cover of the mirror assembly at the pivot joint to reach the 20 mm pivot bolt and the five 4 mm screws as shown above. The photo shows the mirror removed from the vehicle with the 4 mm screws also removed and is for reference only.
  2. Remove the 20 mm bolt. For ease of disassembly, do not remove the five 4 mm screws at this time.
  3. Brush clean the threads of the 20 mm bolt and apply High-Strength Threadlocker - Red, P/N 89021297 (in Canada, 10953488), to the bolt threads. Reinstall the bolt.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  5. Remove the five 4 mm pivot shaft screws.
  6. Brush clean the threads of the five screws and apply High-Strength Threadlocker - Red, P/N 89021297 (in Canada, 10953488), to the five screw threads. Reinstall the screws.
  7. TIghten
    Tighten the screws to 1.3-2.0 N·m (12-18 lb in).

  8. Snap the bottom cover back onto the mirror assembly.
  9. It may take several hours for the sealant to set. It is recommended to not fold / unfold the mirror or drive the vehicle until the sealant has properly set.
