Steering Gear Replacement Non FH4
Removal Procedure
Caution: Replace the steering gear mounting bolts, the washers and the nuts every
time you remove the steering gear from the vehicle. Failure to replace the
bolts, the washers and the nuts may cause the steering gear to separate from
the vehicle. This could cause a loss of steering control and personal
injury.
Notice: Do not hammer on the pitman arm, pitman arm shaft, or puller.
Damage to the pitman arm or steering gear may result.
- Position the front wheels and the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
- Remove the pitman arm. Refer to
Pitman Arm Replacement

- Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
.
- Loosen the line frame bracket bolt.
- Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering gear . Refer to
Power Steering Hose Quick Connect Fitting
.
- Cap the hoses and the ports in order to prevent dirt from entering the system.
- Tag the hose locations.
- Remove the steering gear mounting nuts and the washers.
- Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and the washers.
- Remove the steering gear.
Installation Procedure
- Install the steering gear to the frame rail.
- Install the new steering gear mounting bolts and the new washers.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the new washers and the new nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the steering gear mounting nuts to 500 N·m (375 lb ft).
- Connect the power steering hoses. Refer to
Power Steering Hose Quick Connect Fitting
.
- Tighten the line frame bracket bolt.
- Install the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
.
- Install the pitman arm. Refer to
Pitman Arm Replacement
.
- Bleed the system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
.
