Universal Joints
The journals of the universal joints are drilled each is provided with lubrication fittings through which lubricant travels to all four oil reservoirs, through a small hole inside of each reservoir. lubricant travels direct to the needle bearings. The
seals protect the needle bearings against lubricant leakage, dirt and debris.
- Lubricate with chassis lubricant.
- When greasing the joint, ensure that a flow of grease at all four trunnion seals (1) is visible in order to ensure the lubrication of the joint.
- If grease does not appear at all four trunnion seals (1), rotate the universal joint trunnion in all four directions while applying the lubricant under pressure in order to relieve any air lock inside of the joint. Air lock would prevent the
lubricant from reaching the bearing area.
- Loosen the cap bolts and cap enough in order to allow a flow of grease, as necessary.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install and tighten the bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 71 N·m (52 lb ft).
Slip Joint
- Splines of the slip joint are lubricated through a lubricant fitting installed in the slip yoke. Apply grease gun pressure to the lubrication fitting until the lubricant GM P/N 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037)
appears at the pressure relief hole.
- Cover the pressure relief hole.
- Apply pressure until the grease appears at the sleeve yoke seal.
- Lubricate the universal joints and slip yoke splines at the specified periods. Refer to
Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
Center Bearing
Note: This bearing is permanently lubricated. No attempt should be made in order to add or change grease within the bearing.
When installing a new center bearing, fill the entire cavity with chassis GM P/N 1051344
(Canadian P/N 93037) grease.
Ensure that the quantity is sufficient enough in order to fill the cavity to the extreme edge of the slinger surrounding the bearing. This will shield the bearing from water and contaminants.
