Removal Procedure

  1. Block the wheels.
  2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to the following list for the correct replacement procedure:
  3. •  One-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Two-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Three-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Four-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement

  4. Remove the nuts retaining the drum to the transmission.
  5. Remove the brake drum.
  6. Note: Closely examine all mounting bolt holes in the drum for stress cracks.

  7. Inspect the drum (6) for the following conditions:
  8. • Cracks
    • Scoring
    • Pitting
    • Grooves
    • Overheating damage
  9. Repair the drum as needed.
  10. Inspect the linings (1) for contamination and excessive wear. The minimum lining thickness, with bonded linings is 1.52 mm (0.060 in).
  11. If replacement is necessary, replace the linings as a set.

  12. Inspect the brake mechanism for proper operation.
  13. Repair the brake mechanism as needed.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1500670  Size: SH
  1. Install the brake drum to the transmission.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Install the nuts that retain the drum to the flange.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the drum to flange nuts to 140 N·m (103 lb ft).

  5. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to the following list for the correct replacement procedure:
  6. •  One-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Two-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Three-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Four-Piece Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
  7. Adjust the parking brake. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment.
  8. Remove the wheel blocks.
