The wait to start indicator illuminates in the message center when the engine control module (ECM) commands the glow plugs ON. The ECM provides the ground for the wait to start indicator control circuit. The ECM monitors the voltage on the control circuit in order to determine if there is a circuit malfunction. The ECM should detect a low voltage when the indicator is illuminated and a high voltage when the indicator is not illuminated.

• | The ECM detects a lower than normal voltage at the control circuit of the wait to start indicator when the ECM commands the indicator to illuminate. |
• | The ECM detects a higher than normal voltage at the control circuit of the wait to start indicator when the ECM is not commanding the indicator to illuminate. |
• | The control module illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the second consecutive ignition cycle that the diagnostic test fails. |
• | The ECM records the operating conditions at the time that the diagnostic test fails. The first time the diagnostic test fails, the control module stores the information in the failure records. If the diagnostic test reports a failure on the second consecutive ignition cycle, the control module records the operating conditions at the time of the failure. The control module writes the operating condition to the Freeze Frame and updates the failure records. |
• | A current DTC clears when the diagnostic test runs and passes. |
• | The control module turns OFF the MIL after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic test passes. |
• | The DTC becomes history when the conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present. |
• | The history DTC clears after 40 malfunction free warm-up cycles. |

The wait to start indicator illuminates briefly when the ignition is turned ON. The ON time depends upon the temperature of the engine at the time.
If the fuse opens during this test, there is a short to voltage on the control circuit.
