The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
A/C compressor clutch plate air gap adjustment and air gap specification
Recommendation/Instructions:
The clutch plate air gap is adjusted by adding or removing shims from under the clutch plate assembly.
• | Remove clutch plate retaining bolt. |
• | Remove clutch plate assembly. |
• | Add or remove shims to obtain an air gap clearance between .014-.026 in (.35-.65mm) when the clutch plate assembly is installed. |
• | Reinstall clutch plate assembly. |
• | Reinstall clutch plate retaining bolt and tighten the bolt to 13 lb ft (18 N·m). |
• | Recheck air gap to make sure with specification. |
Note:: These shims are not available separately from GM SPO Parts. If shims are needed they are included with the A/C Clutch Kit (part number 12476085 - fits most applications). This kit will include 3 different thickness shims:

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
