Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. The window lockout switch is found on vehicles equipped with 4 power windows. This switch completes or interrupts the ground circuit to all the passengers power window switches. Therefore it is imperative that the switch be placed in the OFF position before continuing with the diagnostic table.

  2. The master switch has one common ground circuit for the left front power window and the passenger door power window switches. If the left front window operates, it can be presumed that the master switch ground circuit is good.

Did you perform the Door Systems Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn ON the ignition with, the engine OFF.
  2. Disable the window lockout function, if equipped.
  3. Operate the suspect window(s) from both the passenger window switch and the master window switch.

Does the suspect window(s) operate properly from both switches?

Does the suspect window(s) operate from the master window switch and not the passenger window switch?

Go to Step 5

Does the suspect window(s) operate from the passenger window switch and not the master switch?

Connect a test lamp between the master switch lockout signal circuit at the passenger window switch and B+.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Is the vehicle equipped with a window lockout switch?

Test the master switch lockout signal circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the power window master switch up and down circuits for an open or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Does the driver window operate from the master switch?

Test the master switch ground circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open in the passenger switch ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

  1. Disconnect the appropriate passenger power window switch.
  2. Connect a test lamp between passenger switch RAP supply voltage circuit at the power window switch harness connector and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the passenger power window switch RAP supply voltage circuit and the ground circuit at the power window switch harness connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp to B+.
  2. Probe the power window up and down signal circuits, one at a time.

Does the test lamp illuminate at either test point?

  1. Connect the passenger power window switch.
  2. Disconnect the inoperative power window motor.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the power window up circuit at the power window motor harness connector and a good ground.
  4. Operate the passenger window in the up direction.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the power window down circuit at the power window motor harness connector and a good ground.
  2. Operate the passenger window in the down direction.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the power window up and power window down circuits at the power window motor harness connector.
  2. Operate the passenger power window in the up and down directions.

Does the test lamp illuminate in both directions?

Test for an open in the power window up circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the power window motor. Refer to Front Side Door Window Regulator Motor Replacement or Rear Side Door Window Regulator Motor Replacement .

Repair the open in the passenger power window switch ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open or short to ground in the RAP supply voltage circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test for a short to ground in the power window up and down signal circuits. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
