Subject:General Information on Resetting the "GM Oil Life System"

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

Owner may inquire on how to reset their "Change Engine Oil" message.

Recommendation/Instructions:

There are 3 different ways to reset the Change Engine Oil message.

Method 1 (all vehicles, can be reset by owner or dealer)

  1. Turn ignition key to RUN with engine off.
  2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds.
  3. "Oil Life Reset" will appear for 10 seconds on the DIC.
  4. Turn the ignition key off for 10 seconds. The system is reset.

Method 2 (only vehicles with Steering Wheel Controls, can be reset by owner or dealer)

  1. Press the Fuel Information button on the swc until "Engine Oil Life" appears.
  2. Press and hold the Select button while "Engine Oil Life" is displayed for 10 seconds.
  3. "Oil Life Reset" will appear for 10 seconds on the DIC.
  4. Turn the ignition key off for 10 seconds. The system is reset.

Method 3 (all vehicles, can be reset by dealer only using Tech 2)

  1. Build the Tech 2 with Vehicle Information.
  2. Go into "Powertrain".
  3. Go into "Special Functions".
  4. Go into "Engine Output Controls".
  5. Go to "Oil Life Reset".
  6. Press "Clear Entry" button using soft keys at bottom of screen.
  7. Enter the desired oil life precentage using number keys of the Tech 2 and then press the "Perform Reset" button using soft keys at bottom of screen.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
