Fan Clutch Replacement 4.3L, 5.0L, and 5.7L Engines

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 41240 Fan Clutch Wrench

    Caution: Do not use or attempt to repair a damaged cooling fan assembly. Replace damaged fans with new assemblies. An unbalanced cooling fan could fly apart causing personal injury and property damage.

  1. Remove the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

  3. Object Number: 107967  Size: SH
  4. Remove the fan and the clutch using the J 41240 .
  5. Remove the fan blade from the clutch.

Installation Procedure

Caution: Do not use or attempt to repair a damaged cooling fan assembly. Replace damaged fans with new assemblies. An unbalanced cooling fan could fly apart causing personal injury and property damage.


    Object Number: 107967  Size: SH
  1. Install the fan blade to the clutch.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Tighten the fan and clutch using the J 41240 .
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the fan clutch nut to 56 N·m (41 lb ft).

  5. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  6. Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .

Fan Clutch Replacement 7.4L and Diesel Engines

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 108015  Size: SH
  1. Remove the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  2. • Locate the yellow dot on the fan clutch hub.
    • Mark the coolant pump pulley adjacent to the yellow dot.
  3. Remove the nuts from the fan clutch hub.
  4. Remove the fan and fan clutch from the coolant pump pulley.
  5. Remove the bolts.
  6. Remove the radiator fan from the fan clutch.
  7. Inspect the mating surfaces of the coolant pump hub and the fan clutch hub for smoothness. Rework as necessary in order to eliminate any burrs or other imperfections.

  1. Install the radiator fan to the fan clutch.
  2. Install the bolts.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   4. Install the fan and clutch assembly to the coolant pump pulley. Align the yellow marks on the coolant pump pulley and the fan clutch hub.
  5. Install the nuts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
