Subject:Service VME -- Intermittent C0287 and Traction Off Lamp/Message with Windshield Wipers Operating

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

SERVICE VME

Traction control DTC C0287 and intermittent traction off lamp/message with windshield wipers operating

It is believed that a random voltage transient is being introduced into the EBCM through its ignition 3 input ckt 441. It will be necessary to install a relay which will provide an alternative clean B+ source to the EBCM from position C4 (SEO) of the Body Relay block located above the driver's left foot. Cavity C4 is the upper left corner of the Body Relay block as you are looking at it (SI shows the Body Relay block turned 90 degrees clockwise, therefore the illustration should be turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise to show its actual orientation in the vehicle). A request has been submitted to correct the illustration.

Parts Required

    • Mid-bussed electrical center SEO connector Pigtail, GM part number 15306107 or Delco part number PT1268
    • One Mini-relay, GM part number 12088567 (GMSPO)
    • Mini-relay connector, GM part number 12110541 (GMSPO)
    • Four female terminals, GM part number 12129424 (tray 4 of terminal repair kit #J38125-B)
    • 0.5 mm (20 gauge) wire
    • Wire ties as needed

Important note: If position C4 of the mid-bussed electrical center is already occupied, the new relay circuits referenced in steps 3 and 4 will need to be obtained by splicing into the existing harness wires attached to terminal F (B+) and terminal C (ground).

Instructions:

  1. Remove ckt 441 brown wire from cavity E3 of the left-hand IP fuse block. Cut off the original terminal and crimp/solder new terminal #12129424 to ckt 441. Install this terminal into mini-relay connector #12110541 relay position 30 (this wire feeds the ignition 3 input of the EBCM).
  2. Run a new 20-gauge wire with terminals from cavity E3 of the left-hand IP fuse block to mini-relay connector #12110541 relay position 85 (this provides ignition voltage to turn the relay on and off with the ignition switch).
  3. Run a new 20-gauge wire from mini-relay connector #12110541 relay position 87 to cavity F of the new Body Relay center connector pigtail (this connector will plug directly into cavity C4 of the Body Relay center and will provide a clean alternative B+ source to the EBCM when the relay is energized).
  4. Run a new 20-gauge wire from mini-relay connector #12110541 relay position 86 to cavity C of the new Body Relay center connector pigtail (this connector will plug directly into cavity C4 of the Body Relay center and will provide ground to the control side of the relay).
  5. Remove terminals and wire from cavities A, B, D and E of the new Body Relay center SEO connector pigtail and plug into the Body Relay center location C4.
  6. Clear ABS/Traction control DTC's and perform published diagnostic circuit check to ensure proper operation.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
