Don't Do This

Check for green indicator on OnStar® unit.

Do NOT push the blue OnStar® button just to verify system function.

As part of the vehicle pre-delivery inspection (PDI) process, dealers must follow a PDI form. One of the steps on the form states to "Check OnStar® for Connectivity." To do this, many technicians push the blue OnStar® button, wait for a connection and then hang up.

According to OnStar®, it is NOT necessary to push the blue button to verify system function. There is no reason to place an actual OnStar® call unless the technician is setting up service for a customer. The acceptable way to check for OnStar® system function is by verifying that the indicator light on the OnStar® unit is illuminated and shows green when the ignition key is in the ON position. The indicator light is an LED that shows green if the OnStar® components are connected and all diagnostics have been passed. The indicator shows red, or will not illuminate, if there is a problem with the vehicle's OnStar® system. On vehicles that have the OnStar® buttons located in the rearview mirror, the indicator is usually to the right of the buttons. On vehicles with OnStar® buttons located elsewhere, the indicator is usually to the left of the buttons.

The verbiage on the PDI form will be revised to read "Verify OnStar® function indicator light is green (if equipped)."
