Condition

Some customers may comment on a rub noise when turning the steering wheel and/or the steering column slowly returns to center after turns.

Cause

The instrument panel structure mounting location may be forcing the steering column I-shaft to interfere with the front of dash (FOD) seal and brake booster.

Correction

DO NOT REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN.

Using the following procedure, install two (2) 3.0 mm (0.12 in) shims (washers) to the lower column mounting location to return steering column to nominal position.

  1. Remove the driver's side I/P side panel, park brake release handle and knee bolster.
  2. Remove the steering column brace.
  3. Drop the steering column.

  4. Object Number: 1749947 Size: SF
  5. Install washers on the lower column mounting bracket (refer to diagram).
  6. Tip
An adhesive such as 3M™ strip caulk, or equivalent, can be used to hold the shims in place during installation of the steering column.

  7. Reinstall the steering column.
  8. Reinstall the steering column brace.
  9. Reinstall the knee bolster, park brake handle and I/P side panel.
