For 1990-2009 cars only
- Remove the cover. Drain the oil.
- Inspect the ring gear backlash.
- Inspect the case for metal chips and shavings. Determine where the chips and shavings came from, such as a broken gear or bearing cage.
Important: Use this information in the diagnosis of an axle problem. Information on ring gear backlash also helps in setting shim packs for locating and preloading the differential case.
Important: If possible, determine the cause of the axle condition before the disassembly of the axle.
