Test Description

This procedure is for diagnosing problems with the OnStar® button assembly. The following numbers refer to the steps in the table.

  1. Tests for proper operation of the OnStar® Center button.

  2. Tests for proper operation of the OnStar® Call Answer/Call End button.

  3. Tests for proper operation of the OnStar® Emergency button.

  4. Determines if the OnStar® button assembly has the necessary power and signal circuits.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Activate the OnStar® Center button.

Does "Connecting to OnStar®" play through the audio system?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Activate the Call Answer/Call End button.

Does "OnStar® Request Ended" play through the audio system?

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Activate the Emergency button.

Does "Connecting to OnStar® Emergency" play through the audio system?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the OnStar® button assembly.
  3. Measure the resistance between keypad power circuit and the keypad signal circuit.
  4. Activate the OnStar® Center button.

Does the resistance measure near the specified value?

3.0 Kohms

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the OnStar® button assembly.
  3. Measure the resistance between keypad power circuit and the keypad signal circuit.
  4. Activate the OnStar® Call Answer/Call End button.

Does the resistance measure near the specified value?

13 Kohms

Go to Step 9

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the OnStar® button assembly.
  3. Measure the resistance between keypad power circuit and the keypad signal circuit.
  4. Activate the OnStar® Emergency button.

Does the resistance measure near the specified value?

1.5 Kohms

Measure the voltage at the OnStar® keypad between keypad power circuit and the keypad signal circuit.

Does the voltage measure near the specified value?

3V

Test the keypad power circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
