The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Grinding, grating, clunking or bearing type noise from the rear axle. Technician's may find an appearance of a lack of lubrication to the axle shaft bearing and may see corrosion on the bearing, spalled bearing rollers, or flat-spotted rollers.

Recommendation/Instructions:

At this time engineering is investigating the root cause. Technicians should replace the axle shaft, bearing and seal. If necessary replace the ABS tone gear. Fill the differential with the fluid part number listed in eSI and make sure the lubricant level is between 1-5 mm (0.04-0.19 in) below the fill plug opening for the 8.6 inch axle.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
