Condition

Some customers may comment on an engine lifter tick noise, engine misfire and SES light.

Upon investigation, the technician may find DTC P0300, misfires on cylinder 1, 4, 6 or 7 (deactivation cylinders) and a collapsed AFM lifter.

Important: Only vehicles diagnosed with a collapsed AFM lifter are to use this bulletin for repairs.

Cause

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of this condition. GM Engineering has a need to obtain information first hand during diagnosis and repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer's concern and develop/validate a field fix.

Instructions

Important: If this concern is experienced and the SI diagnostics isolates a collapsed Active Fuel Management (AFM) lifter, perform the steps below:

When you are done with the repairs, contact Ann Briedis at 586-575-4439 or Ashmi Haria at 586-492-5418 with the information below. Parts will be requested back using the WPC return process. Do not ship parts until a request has been received from the WPC.

  1. Verify that the VIN and mileage are correct on the repair order.
  2. Is the SES light on? If yes, list all stored DTCs before clearing the DTCs with the Tech 2®.
  3. List all other repairs that have been performed to the vehicle during this service visit.
  4. List the remaining oil life monitor percentage (%).
  5. What is the engine oil level?
  6. • Overfull
    • Full
    • Up to 1 Quart Low
    • Greater than 1 quart low
  7. What is the best description of the oil quality/appearance?
  8. • Normal
    • Excessively Dirty/Sludge
    • Excessively Fuel Dilution/Odor
  9. Provide your dealership's fax number.

Repairs

Important: DO NOT disconnect the VLOM electrical connector.

Replace the Valve Lifter Oil Manifold (VLOM) Assembly, ALL of the Active Fuel Management (AFM) lifters, and the VLOM electrical connector per the procedure outlined in Service Information (SI).

It is important to leave the VLOM connector attached/connected to the VLOM assembly when performing these repairs. Cut the VLOM circuit near the VLOM connector, leaving enough wire exposed (approximately 4 inches) so the new VLOM electrical connector pigtail can be installed with the duraseal splice sleeves that are supplied with the new pigtail.

When using these splice sleeves, it is important to use the correct crimp tools called out in the "Splicing Copper Wire Using Splice Sleeves" procedure in SI, rather than a generic set of crimp tools.

Contact Ann Briedis 586-575-4439 or Ashmi Haria at 586-492-5418 after all repairs are complete with the information above.
