Tools Required

    • J 26900-5 Vernier Caliper
    • J 34673 Flat Gage Bar

    Object Number: 143397 Size: SH

Important: Before installing the differential assembly to the transaxle, select the proper differential side bearing shim using the procedure described below.

  1. Remove the gasket. Using a J 26900-5 with a J 34673 , measure the distance from the mating surface of the transaxle case housing (704) to the differential side bearing bore. This measurement is identified in the illustration as measurement 1.

  2. Object Number: 143398 Size: SH
  3. Using the J 26900-5 with the J 34673 , measure the distance from the mating surface of the transaxle case (701) to the differential side bearing bore. This measurement is identified in the illustration as measurement 2.

  4. Object Number: 143399 Size: SH
  5. Using the J 26900-5 with the J 34673 , measure the height of the differential assembly. This measurement is identified in the illustration as measurement 3.
  6. Use the following calculation with the measurements obtained in the preceding steps in order to determine the transaxle case-to-bearing clearance:
  7. [(1) + (2) + Gasket thickness] - [(3) + Error], where:

    • Gasket thickness = 0.4 mm (0.016 in)
    • Error = 0.2 mm (0.008 in)
  8. Use the calculation obtained in the preceding step and refer to Differential Side Bearing Shim Specifications Differential Side Bearing Shim Selection Table in order to select the proper differential side bearing shim.
  9. Install the differential side bearing shim to the transaxle case.

  10. Object Number: 143400 Size: SH
  11. Install the differential assembly (7051), confirming that the differential ring gear meshes with the countershaft gear (7064). The speedometer drive gear should face outward. Use caution not to damage the gear tooth surfaces.
  12. Inspect the differential assembly for smooth operation by grasping the speedometer drive gear and rotating by hand.
