Removal Procedure
- Remove
the negative battery cable(s)..
- Remove the fuel from the tank. Refer to
- Remove the fuel tank.
- Remove the fuel sender. Refer to
- Clean the fuel tank.
Important: The fuel tank should be replaced if the tank is rusted internally.
- Remove the fuel strainer or replace if necessary. Refer to
- Remove the fuel feed hose at the fuel lift pump.
- Remove the fuel return line at the injection pump.
• | Use low air pressure to blow out the lines toward the rear of
the vehicle. |
• | Replace the pipes if they are rusted internally. |
- Remove theECM B from the fuse panel.
- Remove the fuel filter. Refer to
Installation Procedure
- Install the fuel sender. Refer to
- Install the fuel tank.
- Install the fuel feed pipes at the fuel lift pump.
- Install clean diesel fuel into the tank until it is ¼ full.
- Install the fuel tank cap.
- Install the negative battery cables.
Important: Use a suitable container to catch the fuel.
- Using the scan tool, command the lift pump On until clean fuel is pumped
out.
- Install a new fuel filter. Refer to
- Install a hose from the return line at the fuel injection pump
to a closed metal container with a capacity of at least 8 liters (2
gallons).
- Using the scan tool, command the lift pump On until clean fuel
is pumped out.
- Install the ECM B fuse in the fuse panel.
• | Crack open each injection line at the nozzle. Use two wrenches
to prevent nozzle damage. |
• | Using the
scan tool, command the lift pump On until clean fuel is pumped out. |
Tighten
Tighten the injection line to nozzle fitting to 25 N·m
(18 lb ft).
| Important: Use two wrenches to prevent nozzle damage.

• | Start the engine and allow it to idle for 15 minutes. |
| Important: Make sure the fuel return line is in the metal container and that the
container does not overflow.
|
• | Remove the hose from the metal container. |
- Install the fuel return line to the injection pump.
- Check for leaks.
- Clear any engine DTCs.
Gasoline in Fuel System
Engine Will Run or Start
- Drain the fuel tank. Refer to
- Fill the fuel tank with diesel fuel.
- Run the engine for 15 minutes.
Engine Will Not Run
- Drain the fuel tank. Refer to
- Fill the fuel tank with diesel fuel.
- Disconnect the fuel solenoid fuse connector in the underhood fuse
relay center.
- Remove the fuel hose between the fuel manager/filter and the injection
pump.
- Connect a hose to the fuel manager/filter outlet and run it to
a closed metal container.
- Crank the engine for 15 seconds with one minute cooling periods
to purge the gasoline from the system.
- Install the fuel hose between the fuel filter and the injection
pump.
- Install the fuel solenoid fuse in the underhood fuse relay center.
- Start the engine.
Important: Check for leaks.
- Run the engine for 15 minutes.
- Clear the engine DTCs.
