Instrument Panel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement Team Model
Removal Procedure
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• | Unnecessary SIR system repairs |
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• | Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. |
• | If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. |
Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:
• | Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on
the inflator module |
• | Make sure the bag opening points away from you |
When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag
opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests.
When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag
opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the
air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal
injury may result.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
.
- Remove the passenger knee bolster. Refer to
Passenger Knee Bolster Replacement
in Instrument Panel,
Guages and Console.
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer (2) from
the inflatable restraint IP module harness connector.
- Disconnect the inflatable restraint IP module connector (1).
- Remove the clip that retains the inflatable restraint IP module
harness to the instrument panel (3).
- Remove the two bolts (2)

carrier.
- Push out from the back side in order to remove the inflatable
restraint IP module from the instrument panel.
Installation Procedure
- Install the inflatable
restraint IP module (3).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the two
bolts (2) that retain the inflatable restraint IP module to the instrument
panel carrier.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).
- Install the inflatable
restraint IP module connector (1).
- Install the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer (2).
- Install the clip that retains the inflatable restraint IP module
harness to the instrument panel (3).
