Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1233683  Size: SH
  1. Remove the air intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  3. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness from the transaxle and the park neutral position (PNP) switch.

  5. Remove the shift cable bracket and shift cable from the lever.
  6. Remove the transmission wiring harness from the retainer on the transmission.

  8. Disconnect the Bank 2 O2 sensor electrical connector.

  9. Object Number: 1523736  Size: SH
  10. Remove the left exhaust manifold heat shield.

  11. Object Number: 1492084  Size: SH
  12. Remove the front exhaust pipe nuts (1).

  13. Object Number: 104580  Size: SH
  14. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts and stud.
  15. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L (LX9).
  16. Support the radiator and condenser from above using the condenser tabs on each side.
  17. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  18. Remove the front wheels and tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  20. Disconnect the Bank 2 O2 sensor electrical sensor.

  21. Object Number: 1492086  Size: SH
  22. Remove the left catalytic converter to right catalytic converter nuts.
  23. (Powertrain shown removed for clarity).

  24. Remove the left catalytic converter (1).
  25. Remove the steering gear intermediate shaft .
  26. Remove the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  27. Important: It is only necessary to remove the control arms when the frame is replaced.

  28. Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .

  30. Remove the 3 bolts from the transmission brace near the right axle shaft.
  31. Remove the 3  oil pan to bellhousing bracket bolts

  32. Object Number: 510441  Size: SH
  33. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
  34. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  35. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
  36. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  37. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines by removing the nut holding the bracket to the transaxle case.

  39. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) wiring harness from the sensor.
  40. Disconnect the rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) harness from the bracket on the rear transaxle mount.
  41. Remove the remaining rear bolt from the shift cable bracket.
  42. Remove the front transmission mount bracket from the transmission.
  43. Use a transmission jack in order to support the transmission.
  44. Remove the remaining bellhousing bolts and studs and separate the transmission from the engine.
  45. Lower the transmission with the transmission jack far enough to remove the transmission.
  46. If the transmission is being replace or installed in a holding fixture, remove the rear transmission mount bracket from the transmission.
  47. If the transmission is being replaced, remove the PNP switch from the transmission.
  48. If the transmission is being replaced, remove the transmission mount.

Installation Procedure

  1. If the transmission is being replaced, install the transmission mount.
  2. Install the side cover transmission mount bracket to the transmission.
  3. Install the rear transmission mount bracket to the transmission.
  4. Position the transaxle in the vehicle.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts and nuts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and nuts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  8. Install the front transmission mount bracket to the transmission.
  9. Install the wheel drive shafts to the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.

  10. Object Number: 414901  Size: SH
  11. Connect the wiring harness to the VSS.

  12. Object Number: 475919  Size: SH
  13. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).


    Object Number: 510441  Size: SH
  15. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Install the flywheel inspection cover bolts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  18. Connect the transaxle oil cooler pipes to the transaxle.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the pipes to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  20. Install the 3 oil pan to bellhousing bracket bolts.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 72 N·m (53 lb ft).

  22. Install the 3 bolts to the transmission brace at the final drive area and tighten.
  23. Remove the transmission jack.
  24. Install the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement Frame and Underbody.
  25. Install the engine splash shields.
  26. Install the front wheels and tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28. Remove the radiator and condenser support and the engine support fixture.
  29. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts and stud.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts/stud to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  31. Install the shift cable bracket and shift cable to the lever.

  33. Install the left catalytic converter exhaust pipe. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side .

  34. Object Number: 1492090  Size: SH
  35. Connect the Bank 2 O2 sensor electrical connector.

  36. Object Number: 1523737  Size: SH
  37. Install the left exhaust manifold heat shield.
  38. Install the heat shield bolts.
  39. Tighten
    Tighten to 10 N·m (181 lb in).

  40. Connect the Bank 2 O2 sensor electrical connector.

  42. Connect the electrical connectors to the PNP switch and transaxle.
  43. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  44. Install the air intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
  45. Add automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and verify the proper fluid level of the transaxle.
  46. Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

    Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, The ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.

  47. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Functions .
  48. Road test the vehicle.
