Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
- Remove 6 bolts and the left splash shield (1) from the vehicle.
- Remove 1 nut and lock washer (3), and shift select cable (1) from the manual lever (2).
- Remove the PNP switch electrical connector (1) from the PNP switch.
- Remove 1 nut, 1 lock washer and the manual lever from the manual shaft.
- Unstake the lock plate (1) behind the manual shaft nut (3).
- Remove the manual shaft nut and the lock plate from the PNP switch.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the PNP switch from the transaxle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the PNP switch to the transaxle. Secure with 2 bolts. Do NOT tighten fully.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the lock plate (1) and the manual shaft nut (3) onto the PNP switch.
Tighten
Tighten the manual shaft nut to 6.8 N·m (61 lb in).
- Stake the lock plate (2) over the manual shaft nut (3).
- Adjust the PNP switch by aligning the neutral basic line (1) scribed in the PNP switch with the groove in the PNP switch sleeve.
Tighten
Tighten the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch bolts to 5.4 N·m (48 lb in).
- Install the manual lever onto the manual shaft (2). Secure the manual lever with 2 lock washers and nuts (3, 4).
Tighten
Tighten the manual lever nut to 12 N·m (106 lb in).
- Install the PNP switch electrical connector (1) to the PNP switch (2).
- Install the shift select cable (1) to the manual lever (2). Secure with one lock washer and nut (3).
- Adjust the shift select cable. Refer to
Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement
.
- Install the left splash shield (1) to the vehicle. Secure the splash shield with 6 bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the left splash shield bolts to 5 N·m (44 lb in).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Apply the parking brake and block the vehicle wheels.
- With the manual selector in Park position, turn the ignition switch to START and verify that the starter motor operates.
- Stop the engine and return the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Move the manual selector from the Park position to the Neutral position and verify that the starter motor operates.
- Verify that the starter motor DOES NOT operate in D, 2, or R.
