Shift Control Gear Shift Lever

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  2. Object Number: 179958  Size: SH
  3. Remove the gearshift control shaft rear through bolt and nut (3) from the gearshift control lever.

  4. Object Number: 179977  Size: SH
  5. Remove the gearshift control joint through bolt and nut (6) at the transaxle gearshift shaft (5) and gearshift control shaft (3) with the gearshift control shaft joint from the vehicle.
  6. Remove the gearshift control shaft front through bolt and nut (4) from the gearshift control shaft joint.
  7. Separate the gearshift control shaft joint from the gearshift control shaft (3).

  9. Remove the four gearshift control lever guide plate bolts (2) from the control lever guide plate (4).
  10. Remove the extension rod from the gearshift control lever guide plate (4).

  11. Object Number: 179977  Size: SH
  12. Remove the extension rod retaining nut (2) and two washers at the extension rod mounting stud on the transaxle.
  13. Remove the extension rod from the vehicle.
  14. Inspect the following components and replace the components as necessary:
  15. • The gearshift control shaft and extension rod bushings
    • Inspect the gearshift control shaft and extension rod bushings for excessive wear or damage.
    • The gearshift control shaft
    • Inspect the gearshift control shaft for damage or distortion.
    • The extension rod
    • Inspect the extension rod for damage or distortion.
    • The gearshift control joint
    • Inspect the gearshift control joint for damage or distortion.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the extension rod onto the extension rod mounting stud.
  2. Use two washers and the extension rod retaining nut (2) in order to secure the extension rod.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the extension rod to the gearshift control lever guide plate.
  4. Use four gearshift control lever guide plate bolts (2) in order to secure the extension rod.

    Tighten

        • Tighten the gearshift control lever guide plate bolts (2) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the extension rod retaining nut to 40 N·m (29 lb ft).
  5. Install the gearshift control shaft joint to the gearshift control shaft (3).
  6. Use the gearshift control shaft front through bolt and nut (4) in order to secure the gearshift control shaft joint.

    Tighten
    Tighten the gearshift control shaft front through bolt and nut (4) to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  7. Install the gearshift control shaft (3) to the transaxle gearshift shaft (5).
  8. Use the gearshift control joint through bolt and nut (6) in order to secure the gearshift control shaft.

  9. Install the gearshift control shaft (3) to the gearshift control lever.
  10. Use the gearshift control shaft rear through bolt and nut.

    Tighten

        • Tighten the gearshift control joint through bolt and nut (6) to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
        • Tighten the gearshift control shaft front through bolt and nut (4) to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
  11. Lower the vehicle

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the knob.
  3. Remove the boot.
  4. Remove the front and rear console.
  5. Remove the shift cable end clips.
  6. Remove the retainer clips and the shift cables.
  7. Remove the shift control.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the shift control.
  2. Install the shift cable and the retainer clips.
  3. Install the shift cable end clips.
  4. Install the front and rear console.
  5. Install the boot.
  6. Install the knob.
