BRAKE WARNING LIGHT INOP CHECK FLUID LEVEL

BRAKE WARNING LIGHT - DIAGNOSIS (Revised to add further diagnosis information. Please discard all copies of the previous Bulletin.)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985-86 'R' Car

The following steps should be followed in the event of a "Brake Warning Light On" complaint condition.

1. Check fluid level and add fluid - See below.

2. Check and repair leaks in pipes, hoses and seals.

3. Check parking brake and repair as required.

Some 1985-86 'R' Cars may experience activation of the brake warning light when the brake fluid level in the reservoir falls below the point half way between the "MAX" and "MIN" level indicator lines on the reservoir. This condition may develop due to normal brake pad wear.

The brake warning light switch on this model is activated by a float in the brake fluid reservoir which responds to fluid level and not by a pressure differential switch as on some other models.

The reservoir should be filled with Delco supreme No. 2 or dot-fluids. Return the cap diaphragm to its original (collapsed) condition.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
