SOME CONFUSION MAY EXIST IN MOUNTING THE FRONT LICENSE PLATE ON THE 1985 "R" SERIES. THE LICENSE PLATE MOUNTING HOLES ARE NOT DRILLED THRU THE BUMPER FACE MATERIAL; AS MANY STATES DO NOT REQUIRE FRONT LICENSE PLATES. THERE ARE MOUNTING BOSSES WITH PRE-DRILLED HOLES FOR SELF TAPPING SCREWS BEHIND THE CENTER BUMPER FACE. THE CORRECT HOLE LOCATION IS MARKED BY VERY SMALL HARD-TO-SEE DIMPLES LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 5/8" DOWN FROM THE TOP OF BUMPER CENTER SECTION AND APPROXIMATELY 3 1/2" EACH SIDE OF THE CENTER LINE (SEE THE ATTACHED ILLUSTRATION). AFTER LOCATING THESE DIMPLES, SPECIAL CAUTION SHOULD BE USED IN DRILLING. USE ONLY A 7/32" DRILL AND ONLY DRILL APPROXIMATELY 1/8" DEEP OR JUST THROUGH THE FACE. TOO LARGE A DRILL OR OFF LOCATION WILL DAMAGE THE MOUNTING BOSSES. THERE ARE TWO (2) SELF TAPPING SCREWS FOR THE FRONT LICENSE PLATES IN THE PLASTIC ENVELOPE IN THE GLOVE BOX ALONG WITH THE REAR LICENSE PLATE ATTACHING SCREWS.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
