This information is intended to assist Service Technicians in properly identifying key codes, and suggested equipment for cutting new keys when required. This also updates the Service News Article of May/June 1985, Volume 57-3, Page 13 to include 1986 models.
Key Usage and Identification
One key is used for the ignition, door, instrument and panel compartment and truck lock cylinders. The keys are cut on both edges to make them reversible.
Key identification is obtained from the five character key code stamped on the key code tag. From this key code, the key code cutting combination can be determined from a code list supplied by WDDGM, Curtis Industries, or available to owners of key cutting equipment from suppliers.
Key Usage and Identification
Two keys are used. One key is used for the ignition, while the other is used for the door, instrument panel compartment and trunk lock cylinders. Both keys are cut on both sides to make them reversible.
Key indentification is obtained from the four character key code stamped on the key code tag. From this key code, the key code cutting combination can be determined from a code list supplied by WDDGM, Curtis Industries, or available to owners of key cutting equipment from suppliers.
If key codes are not available from records or tags, the key code can be obtained from the right hand door lock cylinder (if lock has not been replaced). Lock cylinders supplied by the factory as service parts are unmarked.
If the original key is available, the key code cutting combination can be determined by laying the key on the diagram shown in the Chevrolet Shop Manual for the designated model.
The key comes in Types A or B, depending on the key code combination. When the character in the first position in the combination is a 1, 2, or 3, Style A is used. When the character in the first position in the combination is a 4, Style B (factory pre-cut key) is used.
The ignition key, stamped "R", can only be ordered with a plastic protector.
The door, trunk, etc., key, stamped "S", can only be ordered without a plastic protector.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
