SERV MANUAL UPDATE-SEC.7A PARK/LOCK CABLE REMOVAL

SUBJECT: MANUAL UPDATE - SECTION 7A PARK/LOCK CABLE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION (NEW PROCEDURE)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1989-91 TRACKER WITH A/T

This bulletin cancels and supersedes the "Black Drive Cable" procedures found on page 7A-6 in the 1989, page 7A-8 in the 1990 and page 7A-10 in the 1991 Tracker Service Manuals. (ST377-89, ST377-90 and ST377-91).

PARK/LOCK CABLE - Figures 1 and 2

Remove or Disconnect

1. Battery negative (-) cable.

2. Steering column upper and lower covers (six screws). Pull console cover up to gain access to gear selector lever mechanism by removing two screws and two push pins. Unscrew manual release knob and remove.

3. Park/Lock cable from ignition switch as shown in Figure 1. A. Bracket retaining screw. B. C-Clip and cable at ignition switch lock cylinder.

4. Park/lock cable from gear selector lever as shown in Figure 2. A. Loosen two cable nuts and remove cable from guide bracket. B. Cable from slot in manual release plate.

5. Park/lock cable from vehicle.

Install or Connect

1. Park/lock cable to gear selector lever.

2. Park/lock cable to ignition switch lock cylinder; secure with screw at bracket and C-clip at cable end.

Adjust - Position gear selector lever in "P" (PARK). - Turn ignition key to the "LOCK" position. - Reinstall manual release knob. - Pull knob and hold. - Make sure cable is not bent. - Loosen cable nuts and pull cable toward the front of the vehicle until the manual release plate is all the way forward. - Tighten cable nuts so they are flush with the guide bracket. - Release manual release knob. Unscrew and remove.

IMPORTANT

* Make sure that the ignition key cannot be turned from "ACC" to "LOCK" when the gear selector lever is in any position other than "P" (PARK). If it can, that means the cable was pulled forward too far during adjustment. Readjust cable.

* With the gear selector lever in "P" (PARK), make sure that the ignition key can be turned from "ACC" to "LOCK" and back. If it cannot, the cable was not pulled forward far enough during adjustment. Readjust cable.

3. Console cover (two screws, two push pins).

4. Manual release knob.

5. Steering column upper and lower covers (six screws).

6. Battery negative (-) cable.
