Rattle, Pop, Clunk, Oil Canning Noise From Left Front of Vehicle (Dimple/Distort Left Front Upper Inner Frame Rail Panel, Inspect Torque Specifications, Adjust Hood)

Subject:Rattle, Pop, Clunk, "Oil Canning" Noise from Left Front of Vehicle (Dimple/Distort Left Front Upper Inner Frame Rail Panel, Inspect Torque Specifications, Adjust Hood)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a rattle, pop, clunk or "oil canning" noise coming from the left front of the vehicle while driving over specific road conditions.

Correction

Follow the service procedure below to correct this condition.


    Object Number: 1245306  Size: SH
  1. Place your hand between the battery and upper inner frame rail panel at arrow above. Push outwards on the upper inner frame rail panel and inspect the panel for noise condition. It may be necessary to place a pry bar inside of upper frame rail and push inwards on the upper inner frame rail panel to duplicate the noise.
  2. Remove the battery from the vehicle. Refer to Battery Replacement (SI Document ID #861594).

  3. Object Number: 1245307  Size: SH

    Notice: 

       • DO NOT USE a metal faced hammer to dimple/distort the upper inner frame rail panel metal. A metal faced hammer may damage the painted surface of the frame rail.
       • DO NOT USE excessive force when dimpling/distorting the upper inner frame rail panel. It will only take one strike with a rubber dead blow hammer to dimple/distort the panel.

  4. Dimple/distort the upper inner frame rail panel with a rubber dead blow hammer at the location shown above.
  5. Reinspect the upper inner frame rail panel for noise. If noise condition persists, repeat the previous step.
  6. Inspect the torque on the battery hold down tray.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  8. Reinstall the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement (SI Document ID #861594).
  9. Inspect the hood for lateral movement.
  10. Adjust the hood as necessary. Refer to Hood Adjustment (SI Document ID #841923).
  11. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information (SI Document ID #797267).
  12. Inspect the torque on the front stabilizer links.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Road test the vehicle.
