This bulletin is being revised to change Warranty Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-08-61-003 (Section 08 - Body and Accessories).


Condition

Some customers may comment that the side assist step has some peeling paint around the edges.

Cause

The step may have some sharp edges that the paint cannot adhere to.

Correction

Repaint the assist step following the procedure below.

  1. Remove the assist step(s). Refer to the Assist Step Replacement Removable U Step procedure in SI (Document ID #865705).
  2. Clean the step with soap and water.
  3. Clean the step with wax and grease remover.
  4. Remove paint blisters with 3M Roloc #0746.
  5. Radius all the sharp edges with 3M Roloc Grind Disc 1396, 50 Grit.
  6. Hand sand all edges with 150 grit. Feather edge all bare areas and chips with 180 Grit.
  7. Feather edge all the bare areas and chips.
  8. Prime the bare areas per 4901m "Aluminum" system.
  9. Scuff the entire step with Scotch-Brite® General Purpose Pad-Maroon.
  10. Clean the step with wax and grease remover.
  11. Refinish per GM 4901M-D-2005 Approved Refinish Materials booklet. The information for the 2005 GM Approved Refinish Materials booklet will now be online at the GMGOODWRENCH WEB SITE ONLY. Printed books have been discontinued. Steps to the site are as follows:

  13. Reinstall the assist step.
