Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 913428  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Drain the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement .
  3. Remove the nut and brake pipe/harness bracket from the stud.

  4. Object Number: 913425  Size: SH
  5. Note the location of the jounce hose bracket bolt (1) and the brake pipe/harness bracket stud (2) before removal.
  6. Remove the rear axle housing cover bolts (4).
  7. Discard the rear axle housing cover bolts.

  8. Remove the rear axle housing cover and gasket (3) from the axle housing.
  9. 6.1. Catch the oil in a drain pan.
    6.2. Remove any gasket material from the rear axle housing and/or the rear axle housing cover.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gasket (3) and the rear axle housing cover.
  2. Important: Do not reuse the rear axle housing cover bolts.

  3. Install the jounce hose bracket with a new bolt (1) and the new brake pipe/harness bracket stud (2) in their proper locations. Do not tighten.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the remaining new rear axle housing cover bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten all the rear axle housing cover bolts in a crosswise pattern to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  7. Install the brake pipe/harness bracket and nut to the stud.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  9. Fill the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement .
  10. Lower the vehicle.
