Subject:Service VME - Axle Shaft Seal - High Pitched Squeal

Models:2006 Hummer H2

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

SERVICE VME

During the course of your PDI road test, or should you have a customer complaint of a high pitched squeal during slow parking lot maneuvers, the most probable cause is a rear axle shaft seal with insufficient lubrication. This can be verified by lifting the vehicle and rotating the wheel. Should you detect this condition, check for a 4 digit date code on the rear of the right hand axle tube, just to the right of the differential housing. There is a string of 3 digits, 4 digits and 4 more digits. If the middle 4 digits fall between G019 and G071, the axle shaft seal generating the noise will have to be changed. Assure the replacement seal is well lubricated and check that the noise no longer exists by rotating the wheel.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
