Headlining Trim Panel Replacement SUV
Caution: If the energy absorbing foam breaks while you are removing or installing the headliner, use a NEW headliner. If you do not replace the damaged headliner, future personal injury is possible.
Notice: Use care when working around the head curtain inflator module. Sharp tools may
puncture the curtain airbag. If the head curtain inflator module is damaged in any
way, it must be replaced.
Notice: If a vehicle is equipped with a head curtain inflator module ensure
that the inflator module and tether are undamaged. If tether or curtain airbag are
damaged in any way, they must be replaced.
Removal Procedure
- Remove the instrument panel (I/P) upper trim panel with windshield defroster nozzle. Refer to
Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel with Windshield Defroster Nozzle Grille Replacement.
- Remove the drivers knee bolster. Refer to
Driver Knee Bolster Replacement.
- Remove the sunshades. Refer to
Sunshade Replacement.
- Remove the sunshade retainers. Refer to
Sunshade Retainer Replacement.
- Remove the overhead console. Refer to
Roof Console Replacement.
- Remove the sunroof opening trim finish lace, if equipped. Refer to
Sunroof Opening Trim Finish Lace Replacement.
- Remove the overhead assist handles. Refer to
Assist Handle Replacement.
- Remove the left and right body hinge pillar trim panels. Refer to
Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement - Left Side and
Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side.
- Remove the rear seat No. 2, if equipped. Refer to
Rear Number 2 Seat Replacement.
- Remove the rear headlining panel. Refer to
Headlining Rear Trim Panel Replacement.
- Note the routing of the headliner wiring harness down the left windshield pillar and through the openings in the I/P down to the I/P junction panel to ensure proper reinstallation.
- Disconnect the headliner wiring harness connectors at the I/P electrical junction panel and pull the wiring harness up through the openings in the I/P.
- Remove the DVD, if equipped. Refer to
Video Display Replacement.
- Partially remove all door opening weather stripping and position away from the headliner.
- Move the front seats to the full forward position and move the seat backs to the full forward position also.
- Fold the rear No. 1 seats to the full flat position.
- Remove the push pins retainers that hold the headliner.
- Rest the headliner on the seats.
- Disconnect the rear washer hose and electrical connectors as needed.
- The headliner should be removed through the rear lift gate opening. Position the headliner on an angle from the lower left corner to the upper right corner of the lift gate opening.
Important: To minimize damage to the headliner it is necessary that 4 people perform the removal and installation process.
- Position 2 people at the rear of the vehicle and 2 people at each of the rear doors. Begin to guide the headliner out of the vehicle by slightly flexing it to gain
clearance through the lift gate opening.
- Slowly guide the headliner out of the rear lift gate opening and ensure that the edges of the headliner do not get caught on the body sheet metal.
- As the headliner moves rearward in the vehicle, the people located at the rear doors should move to the rear lift gate opening to complete the removal of the headliner.
- Place the headliner on a clean prepared surface.
Installation Procedure
Caution: If the energy absorbing foam breaks while you are removing or installing the headliner, use a NEW headliner. If you do not replace the damaged headliner, future personal injury is possible.
Important: To minimize damage to the headliner it is necessary that 4 people perform in the removal and installation process.
- Using 4 people, position the headliner at the open rear lift gate.
- Gently flex the headliner to create a bow and slowly feed the headliner into the lift gate opening at an angle from the lower left to the upper right corners.
- Continue to feed the headliner into the vehicle. As the headliner is moved forward in the vehicle 2 people should move to the rear doors to complete the installation of the
headliner into the vehicle.
- Rest the headliner on the seats.
- Connect the rear washer hose.
- Install the DVD, if equipped. Refer to
Video Display Replacement.
- Install the push pins retainers that hold the headliner.
- Return the rear seats to the full upright position.
- Return the front seats to the full rear position and recline the seat backs to the full upright position also.
- Install all door opening weather stripping.
- Install the wire harness routing it as noted in the removal procedure down through the I/P.
- Connect the headliner wire harness connectors to the I/P junction panel.
- Install the left and right body lock pillar upper garnish moldings. Refer to
Body Lock Pillar Garnish Molding Replacement - Upper.
- Install the left and right center pillar upper garnish moldings. Refer to
Center Pillar Upper Garnish Molding Replacement.
- Install the left and right body hinge pillar trim panels. Refer to
Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement - Left Side and
Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement - Right Side.
- Install the overhead assist handles. Refer to
Assist Handle Replacement.
- Install the sunroof opening trim finish lace, if equipped. Refer to
Sunroof Opening Trim Finish Lace Replacement.
- Install the overhead console. Refer to
Roof Console Replacement.
- Install the sunshade retainers. Refer to
Sunshade Retainer Replacement.
- Install the sunshades. Refer to
Sunshade Replacement.
- Install the drivers knee bolster. Refer to
Driver Knee Bolster Replacement.
- Install the I/P upper trim panel with windshield defroster nozzle. Refer to
Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel with Windshield Defroster Nozzle Grille Replacement.
- Install the rear seat No. 2 if equipped. Refer to
Rear Number 2 Seat Replacement.
