Disassembly Procedure

  1. Remove the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 740401  Size: SH
  3. Remove the pitman arm nut (3).
  4. Remove the pitman arm washer (2).

  5. Object Number: 398243  Size: SH
  6. Remove the pitman arm from the pitman arm shaft using puller J 6632-01 or puller J 29107-A .
  7. Clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft.
  8. Clean off the steering gear housing (1).
  9. Use a wire brush to clean the steering gear pitman shaft splines.

  10. Object Number: 412386  Size: SH

    Important: The steering gear pitman shaft will not clear the housing if it is not centered.

  11. To center the steering gear stub shaft:
  12. 8.1. Rotate the steering gear stub shaft (1) with a wrench from stop to stop.
    8.2. Count the number of turns.
    8.3. Rotate the steering gear stub shaft back ½ of the total amount of turns.

    Important: When removing the steering gear pitman shaft, the pitman arm and its components may fall from the steering gear housing. Support the pitman arm and its components while removing the steering gear pitman shaft.

  13. Remove the steering gear pitman shaft housing cover bolts (1).
  14. Remove the steering gear pitman shaft lash adjuster nut (2).

  15. Remove the steering gear pitman shaft housing cover (3).
  16. Remove the steering gear pitman shaft housing cover O-ring (4).

Assembly Procedure


    Object Number: 412387  Size: SH
  1. Install the new steering gear pitman shaft housing cover O-ring (4).
  2. Install the steering gear pitman shaft housing cover (3).
  3. Install the steering gear pitman shaft lash adjuster nut (2).
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the steering gear pitman shaft housing cover bolts (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  7. Install the pitman arm to the steering gear.
  8. Install the pitman arm washer (2).
  9. Install the pitman arm nut (3).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 250 N·m (184 lb ft).

  11. If necessary adjust the steering gear pitman shaft over-center preload. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .
  12. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
